Technique:

Kantha Embroidery:

“Kantha” refers to both the style of running stitch, as well as the finished cloth. It is a type of embroidery craft in the eastern regions of the Indian subcontinent, specifically in Bangladesh and India. It was a craft that all the rural classes’ women practiced. “The rich landlord’s wife making her own elaborate embroidered quilt in her leisure time and the tenant farmer’s wife making her own thrifty coverlet, equal in beauty and skill”. Kings never commissioned it, nor landed gentry ordered it, but mothers passed down this art in dowry to their daughter.

The embroidered cloth has many uses including shawls, covers for mirrors, boxes, and pillows. In some cases, the artisans cover entire cloth with running stitches, employing beautiful motifs of flowers, animals, birds and geometrical shapes, as well as themes from everyday activities. Our designers designed this throw blanket with running kantha, which is a straight running stitch and the original and earliest form of kantha.

Ikat Prints:

Ikat is a method for coloring fabric in patterns by resist dyeing. The pattern is not applied to the surface of a finished fabric, nor is it woven into the fabric structurally. To prevent fading, craftsmen protect the parts of the yarns for the warp and/or weft with a resist. The dye then colors the yarn everywhere except under the binding. After dyeing, the craftsmen remove the bindings and the pattern appears undyed on a colored ground. When dyeing is complete, the yarn is then woven into fabric, often in a relatively simple structure and often in a density that highlights the warp.
